The reliability of the MiraTes HIV HomeTest
Why do I have to wait three months before I can test myself for HIV?
The most commonly used HIV antibody tests, like the MiraTes HIV HomeTest, detect antibodies against HIV in the blood. Directly after infection, the virus is already present in the body, but it takes time before the body has produced detectable amounts of antibodies. Therefore, if you have had a chance on infection, you will have to wait at least three moths before you test and can draw conclusions concerning this potential infection from the test result.
Watch out: in case of a needle accident (when you are pricked with a potentially infected needle) you should take in account that the window period is six months in stead of three.
