What happens in my body when I am pregnant?

After implantation of the embryo in the mucous membrane of the uterus, the body starts producing large quantities of a hormone called hCG. hCG ensures that the Yellow Body (the remainder of the ovulation in the ovary) will stay in tact, which is essential for a successful pregnancy. In addition, hCG plays an important role in the development of certain organs in the foetus. During the first period of pregnancy, large quantities of hCG appear in women's blood and urine. This is illustrated by the graph below. For that reason, hCG is an ideal pregnancy marker. All common pregnancy tests are therefore based don this principle.
